Ann Andreas Memorial Scholarship
$3000 Tuition Scholarship
Funded Annually by Jim & Judy Vokac, Willow Ann-Tiques & More
First WSSC Ann Andreas Scholarship Given in 2008.
This scholarship is given in memory of Ann Andreas. Mrs. Andreas was born on March 30, 1909 in Czechoslovakia. As an infant she came to the United States with her parents. The family entered this country through the immigration center on Ellis Island in New York. Ann and her family settled in Winnetka, Illinois where her father was a tailor and florist.
Ann and her first husband, a newspaper reporter in Chicago, had four children. After their divorce, she struggled to raise the children by herself. She mainly worked in retail at Chicago department stores. However, during World War II she worked as a welder, a job she loved. It also paid better wages than “women’s jobs.” At the end of the war that type of job went back to the men returning home from the war. Ann was a feminist before this was a known term.
After Ann’s second husband, Frank, retired they moved to their farm outside Willow Springs. Ann hated to leave Chicago, but she loved all her animals. She loved her horse, Ginger, who had cornflakes and bananas for breakfast.
One of Ann’s favorite pastimes was to go antiquing. Her home was filled with treasures artistically arranged. Her home was always open to others since she loved to cook and entertain.
Ann Andreas died December 3, 2002 at the age of 94, getting dressed to go to a party. Just days before, she had cooked a big Thanksgiving dinner, gone antiquing and to a show in Branson. Ann Andreas lived life to the fullest. The antique store in town was named for her: Willow Ann-Tiques & More.
